Addicted to Lip Balm Queen No. 7 - Rose Buttercream Cupcake

Rose Buttercream Cupcake
by The Lip Balm Queen

This formula and flavor is No. 7 in my series of luxury lip balms made to pamper using specialty butters and high-end and exotic oils.
A deliciously decadent, moist white cupcake covered in rich, smooth buttercream frosting and finished with sweet rose. You can't resist this one! It's even better than sitting in a rose garden on a warm day in Spring eating a cupcakes. Definitely brings back childhood memories. The result is worthy of royalty but we'll just keep it to ourselves for now. This balm truly pampers.

I'm now on my 4th tube. This formula is amazing! The ingredients include Shea Butter, Kokum Butter, Avocado Oil, Apricot Seed Oil, Cherry Kernel Oil, Argan Butter, Organic Evening Primrose Oil, Raspberry Seed oil, Candelilla Wax, Calendula Oil, Vitamin E, Flavors and/or Essential Oils.

These ingredients make the perfect lip balm. Smooth and creamy and super moisturizing. It's lasts a long time on the lips but even after it wears off your lips have this wonder feeling of nourishment and moisture. I wear this all day and apply it before I go to bed.

What is it?

Kokum Butter exhibits excellent emollient properties and high oxidative stability, which can assist emulsion integrity. Because Kokum Butter has a relatively higher melt point, it melts slightly at skin temperature. However, the butter is solid at room temperature, but melts readily on contact with the skin. It is one of the most stable and hardest vegetable butters known. Kokum Buuter’s triglyceride composition is uniform, and consists of up to 80% of stearic-oleic-stearic (SOS) triglycerides. This naturally white and incredibly smooth butter has enormously high compositions of beneficial materials to help regenerate tired and worn skinn cells and further support elasticity and general flexibility of the skin wall.

Cherry Kernel Oil contains a polyunsaturated fatty acid called "eleostrearic". Eleostrearic is considered to play an important role in the production of Prostaglandins, which are an important group of hormones that are involved in pain relief mechanisms as wells as controlling cell metabolism.  also contains natural antioxidants, alpha, delta and gamma tocopherols plus vitamins A & E.  Even though the taste and smell of the refined oil has no resemblance to the actual fruit, it smells and feels great on the skin.

Argan Oil (INCI name Argania Spinosa) is made from the kernels of the argan tree which grows only in the South Western part of Morocco. It is known as “liquid gold” and has been used by the Berber women of Morocco for hundreds of years for its beneficial use in skin, hair, nail and therapeutic treatment. Argan Butter is a proprietary recipe using Argan oil which is exceptionally rich in natural tocopherols (vitamin E) which aides in anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and UV protection. The oil is rich in phenols (particularly Ferulic Acid) which helps prevent damage caused by UV light. Argan oil is also rich in squalene which is present in human sebum at 25%. This attribute makes argan oil very compatible with the skin’s lipid profile and can penetrate the skin deeper than other oils. Argan oil is 80% unsaturated essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids protect cellular integrity and affect cell fluidity, helping to prevent loss of moisture from the skin. They play a vital role in the formation of prostaglandin, a natural anti-inflammatory that reduces pain, swelling and inflammation, while stimulating blood circulation.

Evening Primrose Oil provides a nutrient that’s essential for your health, and you take the oil in capsules rather than apply it to your skin. The important component of this oil for skin – and for other health benefits – is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Primrose oil comes from the seeds of a flowering plant that grows wild in North America and many other parts of the world. As its name suggests, the plant has an unusual characteristic -- its creamy to bright yellow flowers only bloom after sunset and on cloudy days. Evening primrose seed oil contains a high level of GLA, which is an omega-6 essential fatty acid.

Raspberry Seed Oil is extraordinarily high in Omega-3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, Red Rasperry Seed oil is a superb anti-oxidant. It contains 83% essential fatty acids. Much research is available online showing the healthcare benefits of internal use of Red Raspberry Seed oil.  Its high level of Vitamin E is known to be give it an important role in skin repair and conditioning.

Jaffa Lip Balm Review (Miessence Brand)

Hi all!

I'm going to post reviews on specialty lip balms that I find reading lip balm reviews. I purchase them myself with my own funds. There will be no biased reviews nor do I ever ask for free items. The sellers do not know that I make lip balms or that I will be reviewing them. These are blind reviews so that I won't be given and special consideration.

Most recently I purchased a Miessence Jaffa Lip Balm - Certified Organic (however, it is not vegan) in Vanilla Orange flavor off of Amazon. Contains .12 oz in a tube. Cost was $6.60 plus $1.00 shipping with Amazon Prime. Not a bad price for a certified organic lip balm since organic ingredients do cost more than non-organic ingredients.

Here's the link:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NCRHYC/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Flavor: I love the flavor. I've always loved orange and vanilla together. It does have good staying power but remember, I am not a Lip Licker so it may not last as long on someone who is.

Texture: the shea butter is fractionated which makes it feel grainy when applying it but doesn't impart these grains on the lips. I know this is something that can happen if the shea butter is not heated and cooled properly. It can also happen if it isn't properly stored.

Ingredients: (organic) Sunflower oil, shea butter, beeswax, avocado oil, sweet orange essential oil, vanilla extract, rosemary extract.

Manufacturer: Jaffa is made in Australia and imported to the US. When I looked up the company headquarters in Australia, it appears they are a multi-level marketing company and are offering home based business opportunities. I can not speak on this other than what I read since I am not one of their distributors. Australia does have stringent certification standards however I did not see copies of their suppliers certificates on their site but that's not unusual.

In a nutshell:

Recommendation: yes I'd recommend the item I purchased based on my findings. It tasted great and had very good staying power.

About the ingredients: I like that they are certified. However, please note that I do not know what percentages of the ingredients are used to make up this formulation. The first ingredient is Sunflower Oil which is very inexpensive. Note: Just like food nutrition labels, the first ingredient listed on a cosmetic label makes up the largest percentage of the formulation. The other thing I noticed on their website is that when they talk about Jaffa and list the ingredients for this item, they are not listed in the same order as they appear on the label. I think that may be a little misleading since on the website they talk about the shea butter first which is the second ingredient and they don't talk about the sunflower oil benefits at all which is the first ingredient.

About the manufacturer: Read more about them here in Wiki

Education Series - Buyer Beware of Photoshopped Lip Colors

Like you, I am drawn in by the glossy, rich colors of lip tints, glosses and lipsticks that I see on the internet. After all I love this stuff! I think, "WOW! How did they get all of their photos to have the same pose?" Then I look at the other photos displayed just a little bit closer and I can easily see that all of the examples are from the same original photo and only the lip color or glossy element has changed or maybe its been cropped a little differently. Oh my!

I'm amazed at how many people are Photoshopping images of their own handmade products. I know the big name cosmetic companies and magazines use these "tricks" all the time. Did you know that with an easy search in Google there are lots of free tools to use with Photoshop to change lip color in a photo? Yes I know pictures sell but let's be honest here, personally I don't think it's proper for a handmade item to be Photoshopped in the name of sales just so your colors look amazing or different from how the product will actually look on a consumer. After all, I believe people shop for handmade items for other reasons such as quality of raw materials, craftsmanship, flavors, etc. Then I got to thinking...I don't know if most shoppers even notice that this is going on.

So in a nutshell what I'm saying is that technology is a fantastic thing as long as it's not deceiving anyone and to please be aware that this practice is being used. We all work hard for our money and we want to spend our dollars wisely and we want to spend it on a quality handmade product that the artist who created it is proud of.

Do you think this practice is deceitful? If you've noticed photoshopped lippies too I'd love to hear how you feel when you see them.

New Fall Goodies on Etsy!

Aqua Plum Shimmer Lip Tint - New for Fall

Well the summer is almost over. I can't believe how fast it went by. I did get to take time to enjoy it though so I'm grateful for that. So back to posting in my blog and creating new goodies for fall for my shops :)

My first "Shipping Helper", Heather, started college this week at Towson State. She will be studying deaf languages and how to teach them. I'm so proud of her! National Honor Society and being accepted at Towson State. I know she'll go far. Congratulations Heather!

I was fortunate enough that Heather even found and trained her replacement for me too. What a sweet girl. Let's give a GRAPE big WELCOME TO RACHEL. She will be shrink wrapping and handling all that has to do with shipping out orders. She's doing a very thorough job and I know she's going to be a big help to me so that I can focus on what I do best...Make Lip Balms, Lip Tints, Sugar Lip Scrubs and Perfumes!!! Whew :)

Above is a brand new shimmer lip tint for fall. A gorgeous plum with aqua shimmers and sparkle. Rachel modeled this for me today and it's stunning! Did I tell you how beautiful she is? Very tall and thin, I told her she could be a super model. She's very down to earth and I'm going to see about using her to model some lip tints too.

I've also added a couple of other goodies, Bronze Umber Shimmer Lip Tint, Cupcake Perfume Oil and Cookies and Scream Pie Perfume Oil. Hope you love these as much as I do.

Please have a safe and happy Labor Day holiday this weekend!

Lisa :)

How do you know if you're an Etsy addict?

Are you addicted to Etsy?

If there is any question if you're addicted to Etsy today is the day you're going to find out. It appears that the upgrade to their database is taking much longer than originally anticipated so you may feel a monkey your back today due to this.

I know that I'm addicted to Etsy and Lip Balm...so I have double trouble. At least I can have my lip balm today and so can you at my direct website boutique.

So I'm going to take this time to make a few new flavored lip balms such as Rice Crispy Treats, Lavender Honey and Orange Hibiscus. Also going to make a Hostess Ding Dong. Chocolate with majestic whipped cream filling and hope to be able to have these available for purchase by tomorrow.

Last night I added 2 new Shimmer Stix, Inner Beauty and Twilight Orchid. Didn't get to add my third one Cinnamon Stick last night but will add it today as well. Cinnamon Stick is extra cool since it uses cinnamon and peppermint essential oils. Cinnamon to plump up your lips and peppermint to cool them off. Feels GRAPE and all of them are gorgeous!

The Test Results are In

Well the long awaited results from the first test batch for a new olive butter lip balm recipe are in and you can see what Melissa had to say here:

http://thiscrazypsycholifeofmine.blogspot.com/2012/06/time-for-review.html?showComment=1339366807172#c6175726150953070944

As you may recall, Melissa won a drawing I had when I first started this blog to test several new lip balm formulas along side of me. This test recipe was Olive Butter Test #1 f and it looks like I'm back to the drawing board on this one.

I had tried a vegetable wax with this formula. I liked that it gave a great shine but like Melissa, I thought it was too soft. This issue could be resolved with additional wax or changing the wax to beeswax which is what I plan to try next. I am on a quest to find the perfect formula for Olive Butter Lip Balm so please stay tuned.

Also coming soon...a new forum for lip balm (and other makeup) reviews and general chatter. The site is called Lip Lickers Anonymous the web address is www.LipLickersAnonymous.com The forum is in the construction phase and I've set a target date of early September. Hopefully it will be sooner and keep you up to date on that.

Introducing Andie

Introducing Andie

I want to introduce you to my latest perfume oil, Andie. This perfume was created when a GRAPE customer of mine wanted a duplication of Tokyo Milk's Honey & the Moon and Andie is the result. It is a subtly sweet Honey Shea with middle notes of Sugared Violet & Jasmine sitting on a bottom note of Sandalwood. A sexy, sweet fragrance and perfect for everyday wear as well as those special nights out on the town. (One thing I never get to do anyone)

Please stop by my shop anytime to see Andie ForGoodnessGrape on Etsy

Well it looks like our long holiday weekend is coming to close. It's 8:45 pm here where I am and I'll be back in my office tomorrow.

I hope everyone had a GRAPE weekend!

Why should I use a Lip Scrub?

Using a lip scrub is the easiest and best way to remove dry dead skin from your lips and helps to promote healthy and supple skin on your lips.

FACT: Did you know that your lips are one of the first areas of your body that someone notices when they look at you?

How does it work?
A lip scrub removes dry dead skin from the top layer of your lips thus making your lips silky smooth and kissable. It helps the skin hold more moisture and prevents chapping and helps your lip balm, lip tint or lipstick stay on better. Also visible wrinkles around the mouth are less noticeable and can help put an end to the viscous cycle of biting your lips. What more could you ask for?

What are they made with?
Lip scrubs are usually made from a combination of sugars and oils and/or butters and the yummy ones are flavored.

At ForGoodnessGrape lip scrubs are made using a combination of sugars and my very popular lip balm base that I make with a blend of healing butters and oils. All are flavored to be super yummy. I pour them into oval lip balm tubes and you apply it straight from the tube similar to using a lip balm. You never have to touch the product directly and when you're done you'll feel a nice coat of lip balm left on your lips. I also decorate the tops with extra sugars to make them look delicious. The same sugars on the top will be found throughout the scrub.

Why are yours in a tube?
I believe that this method is a cleaner and safer alternative to a potted scrub.  Did you know that dipping your finger into a potted lip scrub may contaminate the entire pot the very first time you use it?

So here's the best way to properly use each type. Remember to always wash your hands well before either method.

How to use a lip scrub in a tube:
Hold the tube as if you were going to apply lip balm. Then gently rub the product across your lips in a circular and back and forth motion paying particular attention to dry and flaky areas. When you're done you can rinse or use a tissue to remove the sugar from your lips or it's totally safe and more YUMMY to just lick it off. Complete your treatment by applying a good lip balm immediately after exfoliating which will nourish and moisturize the newly exposed skin on your lips. Super fast and easy.

Your lips should be kissable, soft and silky smooth after the first treatment. A tubed lip scrub will provide you with many applications so I recommend using it weekly to keep them soft and smooth.

How to use a lip scrub in a pot:
I suggest using a small cosmetic spatula to remove the desired amount of product from the pot then apply the product to your finger from the spatula. Using a cosmetic spatula should help to keep your potted scrub fresh and cause minimal contamination.

Using your finger, rub the product onto your lips with a circular, back and forth motion and either rinse or wipe the sugar from your lips. You can lick the sugar from your lips but if it's a little too oily and/or not flavored it may not taste very good.

When finished, be sure to thoroughly clean the spatula and properly store it so that it's clean and ready for your next use.

Wash the sugar and oils from your fingers and follow up with a good lip balm as mentioned above.

Well there you have it...everything you ever wanted to know about lip scrubs :)

Is the vacation really over?

Tucson, Arizona

Well I'm back to work! I've been visiting my family in Arizona as I do every Mother's Day week. It's so great to see them and I wish I could visit more often but once a year is all I can afford. It's so nice to see my sister too since she's my best friend. I can tell her anything. She really likes that I'm honest with her when she's trying on jeans. And she thinks I make the best lip balms and lip tints. I'm sure there are other things she likes about me too.

We're all so busy with our lives and we really should stop to smell the roses more often. I read some time ago that Americans work more days per year than citizens of any other country. Not so sure if that's still true but I know that I work very hard and I'm sure you do too. We're compelled to do so now. With the cost of living going up every year, we have to.

So let's promise ourselves to take more time to smell the roses and to take our families with us when we walk through the garden to smell them.
